Article #259 How to Hot Sync Janam XP30 (Palm OS) on 64-bit Operating Systems?

Recommended Approach

If you’ve had difficulty USB syncing your Janam XP30 handheld, the recommended approach is to use either:

WLAN: You can syncronise your Janam XP30 handheld using WLAN (Wireless LAN), see Article #116 Palm OS Wi-Fi Internal and External Sync Setup Guide for details.

Serial: You can also syncronise your Janam XP30 using the Janam cradle (part number CKT-P1-002U) that offers both USB and serial cables for connectivity.

NOTE: when using a USB to serial converter ensure that it specifically supports 64-bit drivers, for example Vista 64-Bit Compatible: DB-9 Serial to High Speed USB Adapter

Issues with USB Hot Sync Connection

Item #1 – USB Hot Sync and 64-Bit Computing Platforms

With the trend toward 64-bit computer hardware and software, it has become increasingly apparent that Palm OS, a handheld computing operating system for which ACCESS is the licensor, does not support USB syncronization on 64-bit Windows computers. Palm OS does not include 64-bit USB drivers and as a result, Palm OS-based devices including Janam’s XP20 and XP30 devices will not USB sync with 64-bit Windows computers.

Item #2 – USB Hot Sync and 32-Bit Computing Platforms

Palm OS, a handheld computing operating system for which ACCESS is the licensor, has a USB driver compatibility issue that can manifest itself during USB syncronization with older, 32-bit desktop computers. This incompatibility is well known to Palm OS users and has remained unresolved for years. It is also the root cause of inconsistent results Janam XP Series users may experience when syncronizing their devices using USB cable or USB cradle.
