Answer: The Janam XP30 series of handheld computers offers a fully coloured, brightly backlit screen, which makes it easy to read, especially in dark places. This backlighting however can easily be mistakenly turned off, causing the screen to appear dark and making it difficult to read. The solution is simple though and can be done while in the field, without having to sync or change any data.
- The first step is to determine if the backlighting is turned off or if the entire screen has been turned off. You can often verify this by looking at the handheld screen under good lighting conditions and use the power button to turn the handheld computer on and off. If the handheld is still working with just the backlighting turned off, the screen and icons should still be visible but noticeably darker since there’s no backlighting.
- The easiest way to turn the backlighting back on is to hold down the power button for 5 seconds, when the handheld is turned on. If unsure if the handheld computer is off or on, due to poor lighting conditions, try this step again if it doesn’t work the first time.
- If the Janam has a number pad, another method is to hold down the yellow button at the bottom left of the number pad, and hold the right directional key. This should present an Adjust Brightness slider bar that can be used to adjust the intensity of the back lighting, as well as turn it on or off by sliding the bar further to the right or all the way to the left, respectively.
- If neither of these steps fixes the problem, then it could be that the screen simply won’t turn on due to power or other reasons.
Prevention: The Janam XP30 handheld computers are great and reliable units, however the power button at the top of the unit is small and can be difficult to use. Because of this, route sales people will sometimes hold it down for too long when trying to turn the power back on after it enters sleep mode. To resolve this, the 'Wakeup' action can be mapped to various other keys, including the barcode scanner buttons, or the keys on the key pad. From the Home (Applications) menu, navigate to 'Prefs' and use the drop down menu in the top right corner to select 'Settings'. Inside here, the field of 'Wakeup' controls what action can turn the handheld computer back on after it enters sleep mode. Change this from 'Power', to 'Trigger' for barcode scan triggers to wake up the handheld computer, 'Keypad' for any of the numeric keys, or 'Any Key' for any key on the handheld computer to power it back on.
